Funeral services for Alfred A. Mueller, 90, of Oacoma, SD will be Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain. Visitation will be Monday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain beginning at 1:00 with family present at 5:00 and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
Alfred Albrecht Mueller, the older of two children of Albert and Dena (Blum) Mueller was born May 27, 1919 in Mitchell, South Dakota and raised in Oacoma, where he graduated high school in 1937. Al attended the University of South Dakota for two years, and joined the United States Army-Air Force in 1942. He was stationed in Italy at the time that WW II ended, and was honorably discharged in 1946. On September 25, 1946, Al was united in marriage to Veda L. Sloat at Gettysburg.
Al and Veda founded their family business Al's Oasis in 1952, and under their astute business acumen grew a small rural business into a well known and successful South Dakota business. Al served on numerous boards and state organizations. Al was awarded the Ben Black Elk Award by Governor George Mickelson in 1991, and received many other honors over the years including Spirit of Affiliated Award 1994 and University of SD Businessman of the Year Award 1986. An early and active member of the Black Hills Bad Lands Association, Al served for many years on its Board of Directors. Al also served as a board of director of South .Dakota AAA. Al proudly belonged to the Kennebec-Reliance Johnson Peterson American Legion Post No. 179.
Al passed away on March 11, 2010 at his residence after a long and productive life. He is survived by his four children, DeEtte Geddes and husband Ed of Oacoma, Paul Mueller and wife Mary Pat of Oacoma, Steve Mueller and wife Jeanne of Oacoma, and Mark Mueller and wife Ann of Oacoma; his sister Alice Eads of Sioux Falls, 14 grandchildren, Trisha Burke and husband Brian of Chamberlain, Trent Geddes and wife Emilee of Sioux Falls, Abby Gramlick-Mueller and husband Mike Gramlick of Canton, Megan Mueller and husband Brent Schmeichel of Hartford, Ashley Burt and husband Nathan of Minneapolis, MN, Matt Mueller of Mitchell, Katie Mueller of Lincoln, NE and Eric Mueller of Oacoma, Chelsea Mueller of Sioux Falls, Jordin Mueller of Sioux Falls, Trevor Hanig, Courtney Mueller, Addy Hanig, and Cooper Mueller all of Oacoma and 13 great-grandchildren, as well as a whole community of employees, former employees, friends, relatives and business associates. Preceding him in death was his mother Dena in 1961, his father Albert in 1974, and his beloved wife Veda on August 15, 2000, a grandson Anthony Mueller in 1984, and a great granddaughter Gabriella Schmeichel in 2003.
