Funeral services for Winona M. "Nonie" (Quilt) Byington, 68, of Lower Brule, SD will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, September 19, 2025 at the Lower Brule Community Center in Lower Brule, SD with burial in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Lower Brule, SD. Wake services will be 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Lower Brule and 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Lower Brule Community Center in Lower Brule, SD.
Anyone wishing to follow, the procession will leave from funeral home on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
Winona Marie (Quilt) Byington was born May 7, 1957 at 7:40 am at the Community Bailey Hospital in Chamberlain, SD. She was born to Viola (Black Dog) Quilt and Felix Anton Quilt. She went by Nonie.
Nonie attended Lower Brule Day school and then attended Lower Brule Jr. High and High School. She attended Chilocco Indian School in Oklahoma for one school year. Nonie went on to earn her General Education Degree at the age of 22.
Nonie birthed Camie (Quilt) Rivers on December 24th, 1979, Candace Lee Byington on January 24th, 1982, Sophie Marie Byington on January 27th, 1983, Francis Warren Byington, Jr. on February 15th, 1984, and Brian Joseph Byington on January 27th, 1985.
Nonie spent her life working for the tribe, first during the summer for the JTPA Work programs and later her career was spent working for the Lower Brule Elementary School from 1990 to 2015. In her retirement years, she worked various jobs with the LBST answering multiple phone lines during the day. During this career she also spent time volunteering coaching for the 5th/6th Grade Girls Basketball for the Lower Brule Elementary school. These were the best times of her life with her partner Smokey by her side helping coach the girls.
Nonie and Smokey were married at the Baptist Church by Brother / Pastor Mike Small Jumper on October 11, 2002.
She is survived by her children Camie (Quilt) Rivers, Candace Byington, Sophie Byington, Francis Byington Jr., and Brian Byington, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, Amy Grey Cloud and many other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents, two sisters Renee Quilt and Ethel Quilt, a brother John Quilt, and many other relatives and friends.
