Funeral services for William C. "Bill" Dahlman, 89, of Chamberlain, SD will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 18, 2024 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain, SD. Visitation will be Thursday at 5:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain, SD.
William (Bill) Charles Dahlman, (89), of Chamberlain died October 10, 2024, due to complications of Alzheimer's.
Bill was born on August 5th 1935 in Mt Vernon SD to William Fred and Elizabeth (Drafahl) Dahlman. He went to grade school in Witten SD and High School in Winner SD graduating in 1953.
Following graduation, he worked on the family farm in Hamill SD until entering the US Army in 1956. He did basic training at Fort Chafee in Fort Smith Arkansas. He was in the 4th Field Artillery at Camp Carson CO. Since he was one of the few that could type, he worked as a Personnel Clerk. He also rode the Mule Packs from Fort Carson CO to Cheyenne WY as most people have heard his stories.
He married LaVonne Blare June 9, 1957 in Winner SD and made their home in Colorado Springs CO where he was stationed. In May of 1958 he was then stationed in Germany. In 1959 he was discharged from the Army and moved back to Chamberlain.
To this marriage five children were born. Vickie, Balinda, Shelly, Janece & Clay.
He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain.
Bill started working at McDonald Oil company, managing the Truck Arena station until it's closure. This is where he put his daughters to work at an early age teaching them a good work ethic and how to count change back to his customers!
He then started delivering propane for McDonalds & then Burke Oil company.
Bill enjoyed hunting and fishing. Him & LaVonne bowled on a mixed league for several years together and he also bowled on a men's league. They loved to go camping with family & friends, really enjoyed going to rodeos and also attended auctions.
During his retirement, he helped Burke Oil at times and also drove silage truck for the Rose Family during harvest time.
LaVonne died on February 26th, 2007
He married Elaine Engel on December 26, 2008. Him and Elaine continued to go camping and also spent time going to rodeos together. They also wintered in Texas for several years. Elaine was faithful in caring for him to the end.
Thankful for having shared his life are his wife Elaine of 15 years, daughters, Vickie (Pat) Kramp of Conde, SD, Balinda (Rod) Schmiedt of Chamberlain, Shelly (Jody) Dvorak of Hot Springs AR, Janece (Rick) Palmer of Chamberlain, step sons Todd (Lori) Engel of Chamberlain and Tory (Rebecca) Engel of Chamberlain, 13 grandchildren along with 8 step grandchildren. 22 great grandchildren along with 11 step great grandchildren. Sister in laws Delaine Ellis of Chamberlain, Lyla (Bob) Erickson of Ft Myers FL and a brother-in-law Jim (Margie) Blare of Lakeville MN, along with several nieces and nephews.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, his wife LaVonne of 49 years, 2-month-old son Clay, step son Tim Engel & his wife Shelly Engel, infant granddaughter Emmy, infant great grandson Sage, infant great grandson William, sister Delores Heying, brother-in-law Merlin Heying, nephew Steve Heying and niece Shirley Heying. Brother-in-law Marlin Ellis. Brother & Sister-in-law Roy & Carol Shrake.
