Willard joined the U.S. Army National Guard until April of 1978 at which time he received an honorable discharge.
He worked for the Linton Company in Sioux Falls for a time. He returned home to be with his family and he suffered a head injury and also had seizures, which prevented him from working.
Willard enjoyed spending time with his family and loved reading. He was good at trivia and had a lot of knowledge from reading. He enjoyed crosswords, playing cards and especially playing Yahtzee, which he played a lot with his buddy Richard Johnson and his sister-in-law Stella Flute. He was close to his nieces and nephews and grandchildren. Willard had no kids of his own.
Willard was kind to everyone and chatted with anyone he made contact with and was always very friendly. He had a good heart and would give anyone his last dollar if they needed it. He was very generous, and most of all he had a really good sense of humor, always making people laugh.
He left on his journey peacefully in his home on March 2, 2026, leaving his brother Floyd V. Hawk Wing /Stella Flute of Lower Brule, brother Stewert Hawk Wing of Sioux Falls, his nieces Erin Hawk Wing and children and Kathy Lynn Hawk Wing and children and his Nephews Justin Hawk Wing, Jordan Hawk Wing, Levi Hawk Wing and Jacob Hawk Wing. Willard has 6 nieces and nephews he thought a lot of, 15 grandchildren, 1 great-grand child and many relatives and friends too numerous to mention.
