Funeral services for Verna Schmitt, 101, of Reliance, SD will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2022 with visitation starting at 1:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain, SD with burial at Graceland Cemetery in Oacoma, SD.

Verna E. Schmitt was born on February 25, 1921 in LeMars, IA, to Albert and Etta (Kleihauer) Dircks, and was one of seven daughters.  She attended school through the 10 ^th grade.  Verna married William (Bill) Schmitt and to this union one daughter, Geneva, was born.  Verna was also a loving stepmother to Bill's Son, Lyle.

They made their home on the family farm south of Reliance where Verna remained until moving to Sioux Falls.

Verna enjoyed scrabble, cribbage, crossword puzzles, and watching Wheel of Fortune.  She made numerous quilts and doilies and enjoyed crocheting.  Another much loved pastime was bird watching, with cardinals being her favorite.

In her later years her family appreciated the handmade paper necklaces that she would create for them.

Verna is survived by Kim (Ricky) Madera, Kevin (Brenda) Kaul, Rodney Kaul, Candace Kaul-Fett, Nichole Billbe, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her step-son, her daughter, six sisters Emma, Rose, Norma, Mary, Lena, and Viola, and grandson Steve McLoud.
