Shelley Jeanette Smith was born December 2, 1966 in Beadle County, SD to Vernell "Mick" and Carol J. (Dittman) Smith.  Shelley wasn't expected to live past the age of 5 years but her determined spirit kept her going until 55.  She attended country school in Hyde county through fifth grade and then Chamberlain High School where she graduated in 1985.  She was active in high school and 4-H rodeo throughout high school, competing in barrel racing, pole bending, and cutting. After high school, she attended Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD.

She lived in Texas, Brookings, and Highmore before moving to Chamberlain.  In 1996, Shelley met Tim Engel and on May 15, 1999 they were united in marriage.  She worked at various places in the area including Jailer at the Brule County Jail, as a counselor at Chamberlain Academy and Plankinton Training School, Cedar Shore, and later at Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain.

Shelley enjoyed spending time at the ranch with her father.

Shelley passed away on November 25, 2022 at home in Oacoma, SD at the age of 55 years.  Gratefully sharing her life are her husband, Tim Engel; mother-in-law Elaine Dahlman; brother Jeff (Holley Huisman) Smith; brothers-in-law Todd (Lori) Engel and Tory (Rebecca) Engel; and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents V.E. "Mick" and Carol Smith and sister Sarah Jeanne; paternal grandparents Glenn and Iola Smith and maternal grandparents Floyd and Charline Dittman.
