Shane Justin Fallis, 31, left us on February 12, 2023, while at Sanford Medical Center in Chamberlain, South Dakota, to meet up with the Lord and his dad and the rest of the family who have left us.
Shane was born on May 14, 1991, in Rapid City, South Dakota, to his father, Timothy "Tim" Fallis, and mother, Maxine Broken Rope. He was raised by his grandparents, Sandy and John Abernathy, from the early age of 4 years into his teenage years, then his Auntie and Uncle, Tracy and Scott Shields, helped with raising him until he became an adult.
Graduating from Lower Brule High School in 2009, Shane excelled in sports, playing both basketball and football as a Lower Brule Sioux. In 2012, Shane successfully completed the wildland firefighter pack test through the Bureau of Indian Affairs Crow Creek Agency in Fort Thompson, South Dakota, a feat he took great pride in. For several years after completing the pack test, he studied fire science at Western Dakota Technical College in Rapid City. In addition, Shane worked at Dairy Queen, Taco John's and Subway in Chamberlain and seemed to enjoy being a fast-food worker, establishing a great camaraderie wherever he worked.
Shane became ill at the end of October 2021, struggling with his health from that time forward. He was able to continue working up until very recently, when his deteriorating health prevented him from doing so.
He was a good, loving father, son, grandson, brother, nephew, uncle and friend. We will miss him beyond words and he will be forever loved, but no longer is he in pain. May he rest in peace. So young.
Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Kaylum Fallis, of Rapid City; brothers, Dakota Fallis Sr., of Crow Creek Reservation, South Dakota, Matt Pickner, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Tyrone Broken Rope, of Mitchell, South Dakota, and Chris Broken Rope and Chase Quick Bear, both of Rapid City; sister, Alicia Biskeborn, of Sioux Falls; mother, Maxine Broken Rope, of Rapid City; stepmother, Jory Brouse, of Lower Brule, South Dakota; paternal grandparents, Sandy and John Abernathy, of Crow Creek Reservation; Auntie and Uncle, Tracy and Scott Shields, of Chamberlain; all of his aunties and uncles, too numerous to name; all of his cousins, also too numerous to name; and all of his friends – they know who they are.
He was preceded in death by his father, Timothy "Tim" Fallis; paternal grandfather, Cleveland "Chucky" Fallis II; maternal grandmother, Joan Janis; paternal great-grandparents, Kenneth Hopkins and Verna Roach Hopkins and Cleveland Sr. and Ethel Fallis; uncle, Kalvin Johnson; aunts, Cathy Hay, Lynelle Fallis and Jacqueline Johnson; and several great-uncles and great-aunts.
