Ruby was born on November 18, 1955 to William and Bertha (Eagle Thunder) Fire Cloud.  She spent her childhood in Kul Wicasa Oyate and a lot of her summers in the Iron Nation area, with her best friend Wanda Short Bear and Grandma Lillian White (God rest their souls).  Ruby completed her grade school years at the Lower Brule Elementary school and all four years of high school at Stephan, graduating in May of 1974.  Ruby moved to Bismarck, ND in 1986, to pursue a higher education, and received her Culinary of Arts degree from UTTEC, Bismarck, ND in 1987.  Upon completion of her schooling Ruby returned to Lower Brule to make her home.  In 2004, Ruby enrolled in the LB Community College and received her AA degree in Human Services in June 2005.

Ruby worked at various jobs in the Lower Brule area, including LB Headstart, LB Elderly Nutrition Program, LB Elementary School, Golden Buffalo Casino, Lower Brule Housing and the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe.

Ruby had a passion for cooking, especially baking. She loved to bake and did a lot of baking and cooking for holiday, birthdays, and other special events.  Ruby's other passions included reading, and writing, she documented a lot of her thoughts, life events, and other notes in the many journals she kept throughout her lifetime.

Ruby was blessed with four children Hilary Thigh, Jenna Thigh, William Fire Cloud, and Trevor Fire Cloud.  She was doubly blessed with her grandchildren Nathanial Hyde, twins Samuel and Hillary Hyde, whom Ruby raised as her own, after the passing of the daughter Jenna (Thigh) Hyde, Lazaya, Esibelle, William, and Kaylia Estes.  Ruby loved all her grandchildren dearly; they were all very special to her.

Ruby and Vance unconditionally shared many years together, prior to their marriage on December 18, 2010, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lower Brule, SD.

Ruby started her journey on October 10, 2019 at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD and left peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her family and loved ones.  She was a very kind and loving person and unselfishly shared her life with her family and other acquaintances she encountered.  She is survived by her husband Vance, sons William and Trevor, Grandchildren Nate, Sam, Hilary, Lazaya, Esibelle, William, and Kaylia, Sisters Wilma Wilson, Willa Madison, Jessie Johnson, and Cindy Fire Cloud, and one aunt Irene Skunk, many nieces, nephews, and extended family.  She was preceded in death by her parents William and Bertha Fire Cloud, her daughters Hilary Thigh and Jenna Hyde, and her older sister Ruth Lucy Flute.
