Richard "Dick"
B. Lloyd
June 23, 1937 – February 17, 2025
Funeral services for Richard "Dick" B. Lloyd, 87, of Chamberlain, SD will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 24, 2025 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Chamberlain with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain. Visitation will begin Sunday at 5:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Chamberlain.
Richard B. "Dick" Lloyd was born on June 23, 1937, at the family home northeast of Chamberlain, SD, to Ralph and Gladys (Hampton) Lloyd. He took over the operation of the farm as a high school junior and graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1956. On November 2, 1958, he married Dixie Houska.
Dick and Dixie built their home on the farm which became the center of their life together, and they lived there until his passing on February 17, 2025. Together they had three children: Nancy, Rick and Deb.
Dick was known for his work ethic, progressive thinking, public service, and unwavering integrity. He listened before he spoke-which meant when he did, everyone listened.
He served in the Army National Guard for 10 years, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class E7 with the emergency bridge crew. He served the community as President of the Chamberlain School Board, where he facilitated the purchase of land for the current site of the Chamberlain Public Schools.
Dick was also a Wanalain 4-H Club Leader, Saxophonist for his high school dance band "Dick and His Hungry Five", President of the Lake Francis Case Development Corporation, was a Co-Founder of Hilltop Irrigation District and was a devoted lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
In addition to farming, Dick had a passion for building and restoration.
He also deeply valued time with his children and grandchildren, always teaching by example. There was no task too small and no idea too silly, even after a long day of work. He encouraged every creative idea, teaching gardening, welding, construction, carving, repairs and modifications. Above all, he taught them the value of a life worth living.
Grandpa's workshop was a place where anything was possible - as long as you believed it. He wouldn't tell you what to do, but was always there to guide you. There was never a shortage of stories, life lessons, trickery, popcorn, Hot Tamales, Honda rides, history lessons, fudgesicles, tractor rides ... all the ways he showed his love. For his family, he was their North Star.
Dick and Dixie were blessed with friendships beyond compare. These memories bond them, and they live on as the shared history of all.
Dick is survived by his wife, Dixie Lloyd; three children, Nancy Gordon, Rick (Charlene Mellot) Lloyd, and Deb (Todd) Washburn; eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; his sisters Mary Gab and Merle Foreman, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Gladys Lloyd, brother Jim Lloyd, and infant twin grandsons, Preston and Richard Lloyd.
Dick touched countless lives through his unwavering dedication to family, community, and service. His quiet wisdom, steadfast work ethic, quick wit, and compassionate heart left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
His legacy of hard work, love, and service will live on through the many lives he impacted and the memories he created. His loved ones will carry his lessons, stories, and values in their hearts forever.
"This is not an easy life, but a good life-just as good as the desire and willingness to make it good." -Dick Lloyd
