Myrna Catherine (Malen) Soulek was born on July 2, 1940, to Maurice “Bill” and Martha (Mc Gown) Malen in Jefferson, Iowa. Myrna passed away at the age of 86 on August 18, 2026, at her home in Kimball, South Dakota.

Myrna was raised on the family farm near Lanesboro, Iowa. She graduated from high school at Lohrville Community School in Lohrville, Iowa and attended college at Briar Cliff College where she graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in teaching.

On August 7, 1965, Myrna married Mark L. Soulek in Sioux City, Iowa and they immediately began to make a lifetime of memories on their farm southwest of Kimball.

Myrna was a member of St Margaret's Catholic Church where she was part of the Altar Society and a dedicated member of Court St Patrick’s Catholic Daughters.

Myrna taught school for one year in Iowa and for many subsequent years in the Kimball School District, Richland School, St Joseph Indian School, and St Margaret's Preschool.

Myrna was a lifelong teacher and caregiver to whoever she could help. She loved to garden and care for her flowers, and she loved the many animals they had on the farm, especially the chickens. She was always on the lookout for a pretty bird passing overhead.

Myrna loved the Lord and was very strong in her faith.

Grateful for sharing her life is her husband Mark of 61 years and five children. Michael Soulek of Norman, Oklahoma; Steven (Kerri) Soulek of Mitchell, SD; Kathleen (Del) Schuh of Pierre, SD, Anita (Aaron) Schuh of Heilsbronn, Germany; and Joseph (Michelle) Soulek of Kimball, SD. She will be missed by her 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and her many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Maurice “Bill” and Martha Malen, her mother and father in-law James Soulek Sr and Margaret, two brothers-in-law Warren Soulek and James Soulek Jr, and one sister-in-law Mary Soulek. Along with her beloved grand-puppy Charlee.
