Growing up she attended Lower Brule Schools her entire life and excelled in her studies.  Monica, being the only girl in her senior class, was given the nickname "Precious".  After graduating in May of 1989, Monica enlisted in the U.S. Army, where she served in Iraq during Operation Desert Storm as a Patriot Operator and Systems Mechanic from August 1989 to April 1992.
