Memorial services for Mitchell D. Gibbs, 68, of Chamberlain, SD will be 12:00 p.m. (NOON), Wednesday, July  31, 2024 with visitation to begin at 11:00 a.m., at the Hickey Funeral Chapel in Chamberlain, SD.

Mitchell Dean Gibbs passed away at the age of sixty-eight on Sunday, July 21, 2024. Mitch passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his Dakota Milestone family. Mitch was a much-loved son, grandson, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend.

Mitchell Gibbs was born in Steelville, Illinois on October 1, 1955. In 1956 the Gibbs family moved to South Dakota. At the age of 8, Mitch began attending the Redfield School, now known as South Dakota Development Center (SDDC). When his family relocated to Alabama in 1966, Mitch remained in Redfield at SDDC. As a young adult, Mitch moved to Chamberlain South Dakota and joined the Dakota Milestone community where he remained until his passing.

Those who knew Mitch appreciated his grin, twinkling eyes, enthusiastic responses, and teasing. Mitch loved to fly and got to experience many adventures on his annual trips to Alabama to visit family and friends. He worked at the Dakota Milestone Workshop where he loved discovering where the items he prepared were being sent. Mitch was a creative individual who dabbled in painting, loved to sing and listen to all kinds of music from country to opera to polka. To say he was passionate about the weather is an understatement.

Mitch is survived by his father, Dail Dean Gibbs, siblings John Gibbs, Jeff Gibbs (Debbie) and Julie Gibbs Lyons (David), his three nieces Lindsey Ketchum (Kent), Layken Rubin (Braden) & Laura McClinton (Jacob), nephew Logan Gibbs (Celeste), as well as four grandnieces & grandnephews. Mitch was preceded in death by his mother, Jeanette Mitchell Gibbs, maternal grandparents Marvin and Opal Mitchell and paternal grandmother, Leonora Rogers Gibbs.

The Gibbs family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the Dakota Milestones staff as well as the Chamberlain community. We are thankful for their care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Dakota Milestone, LLC.
