Obituary

Funeral services for Milford Markus, 87, of Chamberlain will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 2, 2010 at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain. Visitation will be Thursday, July 1 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Hickey Funeral Chapel in Chamberlain.

Milford Markus was born June 12, 1923 at Harrison, SD to Jacob L. and Jennie (Doorn) Markus. He attended grade school at Harrison and graduated from Corsica High School in 1941. On June 4, 1943, Milford enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and after his Honorable Discharge he returned home to assist his father on the farm. He also worked as a relief rural mail carrier. He enjoyed mechanics and for several years he had a few trucks and hauled grain and cattle. He worked for Kredit Ford and Menning Implement in Corsica. On August 15, 1947, Milford was united in marriage to Dorothy L. Hietbrink at the Grace Reformed Church in Corsica. In 1949, they moved to Laredo, TX where he worked with the U.S. Border Patrol and in the fall of 1950, he joined the S.D. Highway Patrol as a patrolman. He was active in upgrading the patrol cars as well as keeping the highways safe. Milford retired from the S.D. Highway Patrol after 31 years. He served as a Brule County Commissioner from January 1985 until December of 2005. He was a member of the United Church of Christ serving as a trustee, the S.D. Peace Officers Association, Retired Highway Patrol Association, and a member of the Everson-Buekelman Legion Post.
Milford was active in his children's lives and loved the time spent with them. He enjoyed reading and especially entertaining his grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling around the U.S. and at various times would take grandchildren with him.

Milford passed away on June 28, 2010 at Corsica Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Corsica at the age of 87 years. Gratefully sharing in his life are his wife Dorothy of Chamberlain; son Loren Markus and Jennifer of Cibolo, TX; two daughters Linda Johnson and Wayne of Chamberlain, and Peggy Pringle and Bob Kenobbie of Sioux Falls; a brother Dennis Markus and Doris of Corsica; two sisters Nona Markus and Marlene Plooster and Dean all of Harrison, SD; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and five step great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents.
