Matilda (Tillie) Endres, 85, of Chamberlain passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 23, 2020 at home with all eight of her children by her side.
Tillie was born March 23, 1935 at home in White Rock, South Dakota to Martin and Catherine Zapp. She was the ninth of twelve children in the family. She attended grade school and Jr. High in Woonsocket, SD. She graduated as salutatorian from Carthage High School in 1953. After high school she attended business school in Huron. She then started working at the Beadle County ASC in Huron. She married Francis Endres in Huron on Jan. 9, 1956. This marriage was blessed with eight children. They moved to Mitchell in 1959 where they lived until they moved to Chamberlain in December of 1960. Tillie worked at home while her family grew. She did daycare in her home for many years. Over the years she sold both Avon and Tupperware. She worked at Cozard Memorial Library in 1971-1981. She was recruited for that job by the head librarian at the time, because she and her children spent so much time at the public library. Then she worked for the ASCS office in Chamberlain until her retirement in 1997. She didn't stay in retirement for long. She worked at Anderson's clothing store and then moved on to work at the KPLO Radio station office. Tillie was a member of the St. James Catholic Church and the St. James Altar Society working weddings and funerals for many, many years. Tillie enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, bowling and having coffee with friends. She was an avid walker and was often seen out walking. She cherished spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Kathy Edwards (Frank) of Wyoming, MN, Janice Endres of Fayetteville, NC, Betty Endres-Landry (Jim) of Columbia, SC, Gail Sieck of Sioux Falls, SD, Nancy Endres of Platte, SD, Mary Larson (Lance) of Sioux Falls, SD, Doug Endres of Lead, SD, and Holly Endres of Chamberlain, SD. Tillie was blessed with twelve grandchildren, Matthew, Paul and Allison Edwards, Ryan Landry, Danielle (Sieck) Oliver, Christopher, Max, and Charley Larson, Ivy Endres, Nicholas and Paige Endres, and 2 great-grandchildren Audrey and Theo Oliver.
