Marlys Dog Soldier- Lovell-Miller entered into rest on Monday January 17, 2022 at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Marlys was born on February 4, 1946 to Sophia Rose Pretty Feather-Song Hawk and Silas Dog Soldier-Lovell.
Marlys' childhood years were spent in the Choteau Creek-Greenwood and Marty area. She attended school at Marty Indian School in Marty, SD also later in Plankinton, SD and Lead, SD. She moved to Mitchell, SD in her early 20's where she met her husband Vernon "Chick" Miller. Thereafter, they moved to the Crow Creek District in the early 1970's where she lived her beautiful life. She birthed nine children: Lisa, Scott, Vernon Jr., Shelley, Ricky, Brian, Wesley, Chadwick, and Michael. She also raised her grandchildren Naomi Marks, Brian Miller Jr., Casey Harrison, Dahn Miller, and great grandchildren Atahnna Drappeaux, Ale-Jae Harrison and Jonah Harrison. Her home was always open for her to help others. She had a kind and loving heart.
Marlys' specialty was always cooking and baking. She always enjoyed feeding her family and the people/community many delicious meals. She worked for the Crow Creek District Elderly Food Program, then at Crow Creek High School for many years and at Mid-Dakota Hospital from where she retired on July 1, 2021. She also held other various jobs to provide for her family.
The simplest pleasures brought great joy for Marlys. Marlys loved "bumming" with her family and especially loved hitting up the Goodwill, Salvation Army and other thrift stores. She enjoyed attending wacipi's, carnivals, and parades. Her and Grandma Sophie never missed the Wagner Labor Day Parade and made it their tradition to get their funnel cakes on the carnival midway and at the wacipi's. She would make regalia for her grandchildren throughout the years. In her younger years she loved to camp and fish with her children and grandchildren. She would plan the biggest and nicest picnics for family birthdays and holidays. Oh, how she could cook! Her and her husband Chick would plant the largest garden each year and they canned many vegetables with the help of Grandma Effie. She would plant flowers in her planter each spring and had quite the green thumb. It was one of her great pleasures to go for walks with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved to attend and watch her great grandson Ray at his sporting events. She always enjoyed visiting with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and supporting them in all their life endeavors.
Marlys is survived by her children: Lisa Miller (Mark Marks) of Wagner, SD, Scott Miller (Ed St. John) of Crow Creek District, Shelley (Arnell) McMahon of Crow Creek District, Ricky Miller of Crow Creek District, Brian Miller Sr. (Destany) of Sioux Falls, SD, Wesley Miller of Crow Creek District, Chadwick Miller (Mataja) of Crow Creek District, and Michael Miller of Crow Creek District; all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren; her siblings Marvin Joe Dog Soldier-Lovell of Wagner, SD, Everdale Song Hawk of Lake Andes, SD, Jay & Rose Bazemore Children: Neyla, Jon Paz & Marcus Chapman of Vermillion, SD and Arthur Dog Soldier of Billings, MT.
