Funeral services for Marlys Avon (Dietrich) Buum, 86, of Chamberlain, SD will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, February 6, 2025 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Chamberlain with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain, SD.  Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Marlys Avon (Dietrich) Buum passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 86 on February 3, 2025 at the Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain.

Marlys was born January 7, 1939 to Lyle Kenneth and Avon Dietrich in Iowa Falls, IA.

Her family moved to Battleboro, VT when she was an infant.  Later they moved to Alcester, SD where Marlys started school, graduating from high school.

On May 21, 1956 Marlys was united in marriage to Roger M. Buum in Luverne, MN.   They lived in the Alcester, SD and Hawarden, IA areas.

They moved their family to Sioux Falls, SD in 1963.  Marlys was employed at Kopell's Bridal Shop in downtown Sioux Falls.

Moving to Chamberlain in 1966 Marlys continued to sew and do alterations in their home.  She worked in the elementary school lunchroom, McDonalds, and Al's Oasis until retiring.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Gratefully sharing in her life were her husband, Roger, 4 sons; Roger, Dale, Leonard (Penny), and Lyle(Tasha), 3 daughters; Mary Ann Mann (Dennis), Sheryl Steckelberg (Duane), and Joyce Hoffer.  Brother Marlyn (Laura) of Chesapeake, Virginia.  Grandchildren; Denny, Stacie, Leslie, Kodi, Lyndsie, Jenny, Melissa, Lance, Shane, Michael, Ashley, Brittney, Kayla, Hunter, Tyler, Michael, Christena, Brent, Abriale, and Braeden. They were blessed with 43 great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her mother and father-in-law, sons Roger and Dale, and grandson Tyler.
