Funeral services for Marlow Medicine Crow, Sr., 69, of Fort Thompson will be 1:00 pm Monday, October 1, 2018 at the Crow Creek Tribal Hall in Fort Thompson with burial in the Medicine Crow Family Plot at Fort Thompson. Wake services will be Saturday and Sunday evening at 7:00 pm at the Crow Creek Tribal Hall in Fort Thompson.
Marlow Medicine Crow, Sr. of Fort Thompson passed away on September 27, 2018 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
Marlow Medicine Crow was born July 3, 1949 to Elizabeth His Law and Marvin Medicine Crow. Marlow attended elementary school at Fort Thompson and Pierre Indian Learning Center where he excelled in sports and academics and due to his academic achievements was sent to St. James, Maryland for high school and college prep. Marlow left high school early and married Julia Brown Wolf and they had a daughter, Marvin Mary Lou, whom he named after his late sister. Marlow joined the military where he volunteered for Vietnam and raised to the rank of sergeant because of his acts of valor in battle. While in the military he received three bronze stars and one silver star. Marlow was a paratrooper. He believed, once a soldier always a soldier. After the military, Marlow has two daughters, Misty Reed and Davita Grass Rope. Forty-four years ago Marlow met his wife Darlene and to that union two sons were born Marlow Jr. and Matthew.
Marlow believed in education and showed it not just through this talk but his actions. Marlow received his B.S. Degree from Huron University and his Master's Degree from Sinta Gleska University. He often encouraged others to go to school. Marlow was an athlete throughout his life. He was involved in softball with his team, the Renegades. Marlow was active in bowling and was inducted into the 300 club for bowling a perfect game. He was an avid golfer where he won many tournaments. He accomplished three hole-in-ones during his golfing years. Marlow loved sports and competition. Hunting, fishing, and trapping were part of his life. Horses were his passion throughout his life. Marlow was a good, responsible man who placed the needs of his family first. There was never a challenge that he didn't rise to. He had a strong work ethic and guided others to have the same. Marlow held many positions throughout his life including Tribal Treasurer from 1982-1986, Principal and his favorite, 3rd grade teacher. Marlow had two legs amputated yet continued to be an inspiration because he never dwelled on his misfortune but rather was thankful for each day. Marlow lived a fulfilling life with many accomplishments. His was truly a life well lived. Marlow was the strongest and most gentle man.
He leaves behind his wife Darlene; sons Marlow Jr. and Matt; daughters Mary Lou and Misty; his jecha girl Megan; and jecha boy Aspen; grandchildren; Marlow's brothers Marvin "Beanie" Medicine Crow, Leroy Ross Jr., and his sisters are Myrtle Ann Medicine Crow, Mavis McGhee, Diane, Brenda, and LaDonna Ross; cousins, and his many nephews and nieces that he took such joy in.
Marlow joins his parents, grandmother Sophie; brother Richard "Cowboy" His Law; sister Marvine;, daughter Davita; cousins Nate and Cookie; grandson Emilio; and many more loved ones in the Spirit World.
Marlow will be missed and his life teachings will live on.
