Funeral services for Marilyn R. Harmon, 89, of Lower Brule, SD will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 26, 2023 at the Holy Comforter Episcopal Hall in Lower Brule, SD with burial in the Messiah Episcopal Cemetery at Iron Nation, SD.  Wake services will be 7:00 p.m., Sunday the Holy Comforter Episcopal Hall in Lower Brule, SD.

Anyone wishing to follow, the procession will leave from funeral home on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Marilyn Harmon Obituary

Marilyn Rika Langdeau Harmon was surrounded by her loving family when she passed away in the early morning hours on Sunday, June 18, 2023.  She was born in Rosebud, SD on September 25, 1933, to Harvey Langdeau and Aldena Thompkins Langdeau.  She spent her early childhood in Rosebud with her Grandma Emma Blue Eyes who gave her the Lakota name, Sichangu Win (Rosebud Woman).  She attended School in Lower Brule, Pierre Indian Learning Center and Crow Creek Tribal School.  Through her school years she spent a lot of her time in and out of hospitals due to having health problems from the time she was born.  Eventually, her family moved from Rosebud to Iron Nation then to Old Lower Brule, Iowa and back to the current location of Lower Brule where she met the love of her life, Kenneth (Kenny) Harmon. Kenny and Marilyn (or Mary as Kenny called her) were married on May 25, 1953.  They started out living in Lower Brule, while Kenny was in the army located at Camp Stewart (which it was called at that time) in Savannah, GA while Kenny was in the army, Polk City, Iowa, from there back to the current location of Lower Brule.  They lived in many locations due to Kenny's work.

Over the years, Marilyn was a homemaker, worked for the State as an extension agent, including 4-H which included her children.  She was very active in her church, always volunteering, raising funds, and pitching in where needed.  She also spent countless hours teaching crafts to the community.  Marilyn and her family helped organize and put on various rodeos and horse races in Lower Brule and surrounding areas as well.

Marilyn very much enjoyed traveling and visiting family and friends in the many states they settled in.  She also enjoyed planting flowers and beading in her spare time and was well known for her beautiful Lakota beadwork.  It was she who encouraged so many of her relatives to sew, make crafts and create their own beautiful work of art.  She was an avid seamstress she made her own patterns from newspapers.  You couldn't tell her creations were homemade.

Marilyn is survived by her brother Clark Zephier of Bad Nation; her daughters Sandra (Joe) Abdo, Mary Jane (Boyd) Gourneau, Kenna Theragood, Dena (Kelly Vosberg) Harmon, Jean Nahomni Mani Harmon, Karil Harmon, and son John (Jodi) McCauley; Marlys Langdeau (special niece); 31 grandchildren, 68 great grandchildren, and 36 great-great grandchildren.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years Kenny, her parents Harvey and Aldena Langdeau, all brothers and sisters; grand babies Kip Allen Kersting, Kyle Lee Two-Bulls; and great grand baby Trinity Noel Tubbs.
