Funeral services for Marie J. Fox, 91, of Chamberlain, will be 10:30 am Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at St. James Catholic Church in Chamberlain, SD with burial in St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery at Miller, SD. Visitation will begin Monday at 5:00 pm with a 7:00 pm scripture/rosary service at St. James Catholic Church.
Marie J. Sanders was born June 7, 1927 in Pierre, SD to Lawrence M. and Emma R. (Koc) Sanders. She attended school at Ree Heights through her junior year before moving to Miller where she graduated from Miller High School in 1945. After high school, she attended the University of South Dakota at Vermillion earning her teaching certificate. She taught for three years in country schools before returning to USD in the fall of 1949 where she earned her Bachelor's Degree and later her Master's Degree.
On October 6, 1956, Marie was united in marriage to William E. Fox at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Miller, SD. They made their home in Mitchell where Marie taught at Notre Dame and also played in the Municipal Band for three years. Her teaching career consisted of teaching English and later becoming Principal in Wessington Springs, teaching music in DeSmet, Britton, and the remainder of her career spent in the Chamberlain Public School District as the rural music coordinator. In January of 1996, Marie retired from teaching.
Marie was a member of St. James Catholic Church, St. James Altar Society, and an active in the choir at church. She was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the S.D.E.A.
Her hobbies included reading, crossword puzzles, and trivia.
Marie passed away on May 25, 2019 at the Aurora Brule Nursing Home in White Lake, SD at the age of 91 years. Gratefully sharing her life are her niece Kathy Keffeler and her family of Rapid City, SD; and many other family and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband.
