Funeral services for Lyle L. DeHaai, 72, of Chamberlain, SD will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 23, 2023 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain, SD. Visitation will begin Friday at 5:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Hickey Funeral Chapel in Chamberlain.
Lyle Lee DeHaai was born on July 4, 1951, the oldest of five children, to Alvin and Margaret (Janson) DeHaai, at Stickney, SD. He grew up on a farm south of White Lake, SD where he attended country school through the eighth grade and then Stickney High School graduating in 1970. He attended Mitchell Vo-Tech, graduating in 1972 with a degree in agriculture. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy and S.D. Army National Guard serving a total of 31 years.
While attending a wedding dance, Lyle met Lorna Werkmeister and the two were married July 12, 1974. To this union they were blessed with four children Lee, Lance, Lynette and Lindsey.
Lyle loved to fish, hunt, and do woodworking. He enjoyed going on walks with his kids and grandkids and he loved to golf with his granddaughter Brook. His favorite thing was fishing with his kids and grandkids.
He was a member and Commander of the VFW in Chamberlain and a member of the American Legion Potter Post in Chamberlain. He called Bingo for the VFW and on special occasions would put up the flags around town. He traveled around the U.S. and the World with this guard unit.
Lyle held different jobs such as farming in the Stickney area, at a lumbermill in Hill City, the pork plant in Wagner, and his last employment before retiring was with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a Heavy Equipment Operator. He also worked part time at John Deere (Weber Implement) in Chamberlain.
Lyle was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain, served as an elder and was involved in the Men's Bible Study group.
Lyle passed away on December 20, 2023 at Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain, SD at the age of 72 years. Gratefully sharing his life are his wife Lorna of Chamberlain; children Lee (Tina) of Chamberlain, Lance (Sarah) of Miller, Lynette (Ahren) McCoy of Rochester, MN, and Lindsey (Jordon) Lucht of Jackson, MN; nine grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren, and four siblings Jane (Bob) King, Janet (Wayne) Lefers, Lori (Dale) Peters, and Jim (Alice) DeHaai.
Preceding him in death were his parents Alvin and Margaret DeHaai.
