Obituary

Keith Milo Osterberg, 88, passed away November 3, 2026, peacefully at home surrounded by his family.

Keith Osterberg was born and raised on a farm near Salem, South Dakota to Ewald and Esther Osterberg. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959. Upon his honorable discharge, he hitchhiked from California back to the farm and began working as a telephone lineman with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, retiring after 42 years.

He married Ardyce Knutson during a blizzard in January of 1962. They made Chamberlain their home in 1967 and had four daughters.

He was active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycee’s), and the Chamberlain Fire Department for 40 years, serving as Fire Chief for four terms.

Keith was a faithful servant of Trinity Lutheran Church. Over the years, he managed the church’s sound system, cooked for the annual lutefisk supper, and for more than 30 years, shoveled the snow and kept the sidewalks clear and safe for those coming to church. Dad was known to lend a hand, whether it was helping at church, helping to install a toilet for a buddy, driving out of town to help get new-ish seats for the theater, driving friends to doctor appointments, maintenance and odd jobs, watching over a friend’s home while they were out of town are just a few things. He was a ‘Go To’ person, all you had to do was ask.

Keith enjoyed researching his Scandinavian ancestry, fishing for walleye, watching the Chamberlain Cubs, and going to his coffee and happy hour groups with his friends. He loved golfing and even got a Hole in One on May 17th 2018.

Most importantly, his greatest accomplishment was being a dad and grandpa. His daughters and grandchildren were his pride and joy.

He is survived by his wife, Ardyce, daughters Julie (Terry) Menzie of Chamberlain, Janine (Jayme Johnson) Osterberg, of New Braunfels, TX, Jennifer (Phillip) Stiles of Rapid City, Jill (Shane) Murphy of Spearfish, 10 grandchildren – Stephen (Christina) Menzie, Ashton Menzie, Matthew Menzie, Caleb Menzie, Richard Menzie, Christopher Johnson, Ryan (Selin) Stiles, Kayli Stiles, Alison (Steven) Murphy, and Emma Murphy, and four great grandchildren, his brother, Dean Osterberg of Rock Rapids, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ewald and Esther Osterberg, brother Norman Osterberg and wife Carol, sister in-law Ida, and infant sister Lois. Also preceding him in death was his good friend Denny Shephard.

The family would like to thank the South Dakota Veterans Administration ALS and Palliative Care Team, Kore Cares In Home Care, and AseraCare Hospice for the exceptional care.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Chamberlain Fire Department or the Chamberlain School District Band Program.
