Obituary

Memorial services for Judy A. Schofield will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 25, 2026 at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain.  Judy & Allen's ashes will be interred together in Riverview Cemetery immediately following the memorial services.

Judy Ann (Tschetter) Schofield, 82, of Chamberlain, SD, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2025, at the Sanford Longterm Care Center in Chamberlain.

Judy was born in Bridgewater, SD on November 25, 1943, to Barbara J. (Gross) and Paul P. Tschetter. She was the youngest of thirteen children. She was baptized and a member of Neu Hutterthaler Mennonite Church near Bridgewater, SD. Judy lived in Bridgewater until her graduation from Bridgewater High School in 1961. She attended the College of Commerce in Huron, SD. Upon completion, she worked in the SDEA office in Pierre, SD, and later worked as secretary to the State Comptroller.

Judy met Allen Schofield (originally of Ottumwa, SD) in Pierre on a blind date bowling with their best friends. Judy and Allen were married on October 11, 1964, near Bridgewater, SD at the Neu Hutterthaler Church. Through this union, they welcomed two daughters (Angie and Amy), two sons-in-law (Sean and Terry), and three grandchildren (Elizabeth, Jessica and Reed).

Through the years they lived in Ft. Pierre, SD, Winner, SD, Parkson, SD and Milbank, SD, before finally settling in Chamberlain, SD where they remained for over 30 years. Judy worked in jobs primarily based on caring for others such as the Regency Retirement Assisted Living in Chamberlain, SD where she was a certified medication aide and cook before retirement. Along the way she also worked as a bookkeeper, typesetter, and proofreader. She could spot a misspelled word in a heartbeat and could type with speed.

Judy's favorite role was being a mother and grandmother. She supported her children's activities including a Mothers' Led in-home Preschool, Co-leader of Campfire Girls, and many church committees such as bible school, Sunday school and Christmas church program coordinator. She did not have the gift of a beautiful singing voice, but she would participate by doing a wonderful dramatic reading to music instead, often during the holiday services.

Judy was a devoted mother who always made time for her children. She was always there for sick days, snow days, homework help, and any support her children needed for a school extracurricular activity. Judy adored being a grandmother and often spoke about the "grandma shower" her friends threw her upon her first grandchild's arrival. Judy was a wonderful friend and always easily made new batches of friends wherever she lived or worked. She was on bowling leagues in her earlier years in Winner, SD and took time to go out for coffee, bake her famous "wacky cake", and celebrate their birthdays and other milestones with her friends everywhere. Judy adored animals, specifically cats, and always had at least one in her home that she loved and nurtured.

Judy spent her final years in residence at the Sanford Longterm Care Center, but attended church with Allen at UCC and Central Plains Churches in Chamberlain. She loved sitting, visiting, and taking part in activities with the center staff, residents, and her family. She often had a smile on her face and was kind to everyone. She loved it when children would visit. She would light up upon sight of Angie or Amy when they came to visit and proudly would announce "there's my daughter!", and she especially loved when Allen visited. Judy and Allen celebrated their 60th Anniversary in 2024, and Judy celebrated her 82nd birthday just recently. She will be dearly missed by all that were lucky enough to have crossed paths with her during their lives.

Judy was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Allen; her parents, Paul P & Barbara Tschetter; sisters Betty (Erwin) Gross, Elsie (Eli) Wipf, Marie (James) Hayes, Susie (Wilmer) Bunger, Darlene (Vic) Schaeffer, LaVonne Tschetter; brothers Paul S. (Susie), Dave, Solomon, Melvin, and Edwin Tschetter; brothers-in-law Kenneth Wallmann, Orval Graber, Dean Schofield, and Wilmer Bunger and sisters-in-law Linda (Schofield) Snook and Gloria (Schofield) Hansen.

Judy is survived by her loving children Angie (Sean) Stucker of Spirit Lake, IA, and Amy (Terry) Sund of Winner, SD; and grandchildren Elizabeth, Jessica and Reed Stucker. She is survived by her dearest sisters Evelyn Wallmann of Huron, SD and Diane Graber of Winner, SD as well as sisters-in-law Delcie Schofield Hall, Edna Tschetter; brother-in-law Vic Schaeffer and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
