Jeffrey John Hawk was born January 11, 1963 at Chamberlain, SD to Melvin and Elnita (Kirkie) Rank.  He was raised in the Fort Thompson/Bad Nation area and attended school at Flandreau Indian School where he graduated in 1981.  He then went on to attend Haskell Indian Junior College from 1981 to 1983.

Jay was united in marriage to Jewel McGuire and to this union three children were born: J'Shonn, Jayson, and JC.

His passion other than his family was basketball.  He excelled at it and shared his abilities with others.  He coached basketball at the high school and collegiate level.  He not only was inspired to coach his children but other young children also.

He was united in marriage to Pam Descharme and to this union his son Michael was born.

Jay was a jack of all trades which he learned well from his father.  He did what was necessary to provide for himself and his family.  His father taught him mechanics, carpentry, concrete, construction, and his most recent occupation was as maintenance manager for a retirement center.

Jay had a special ability to tease, joke, and create friends along the way, wherever he lived.

Jay passed away on March 3, 2021 at St. Patrick's Hospital in Missoula, MT at the age of 58 years.  Gratefully sharing his life are his mother Elnita Rank of Fort Thompson; wife Pam; daughter J'Shonn and her children Teyler, BriElle, Emmersyn, and Eastyn; son Jayson and his children Amarion, Taliyah, Taleeson, and Grayson, son JC Wayne and his children Aundreya and Aubrey, and son Michael McCue; his siblings Robyn Hawk of Lodgepole, Mt, Ronda Hawk, Roxie Estes, and Kristal Hawk all of Fort Thompson, Kirk Hawk of Belle Paine, MN, Mel Rank Sr., Melva Rank, Melita "Chepa" Rank, and Larry Rank all of Fort Thompson, SD; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were his father Melvin Rank, brother Marty Rank, three sisters Darcy Rank, Linda Volesky, and Karen Will and grandparents Leon Sr. and Laura Kirkie.
