James O.
Steckelberg
March 22, 1952 – April 4, 2021
A Celebration of Life service for James "Jimmy" Steckelberg, 69, of Oacoma, will be 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at Jim and Connie's home: 102 Bice St., Oacoma, SD 57365.
James (Jimmy) Owen Steckelberg was born on March 22, 1952 in Kimball, SD. Jim was the fourth of six boys born to Gene and Delora (Mebius) Steckelberg.
Jimmy attended his school years in Chamberlain and graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1970. He lived his entire life in the Chamberlain/Oacoma area and was always proud of his hometown. He loved growing up in Chamberlain and terrorizing the town with his five brothers. His favorite thing in the world was having a cold beer on a boat on the Missouri River on a hot summer day.
Jimmy lived a work hard, play hard life and built many great friendships along the way. He became an excellent cook and honed his skills with his brother, Bruce, at the Rainbow Café. He later cooked at Al's Oasis where he made excellent food and built lasting friendships. Jimmy then worked in sales and customer service for Pepsi Co. and was a supervisor at Servall before "retiring" in 2019. After retirement, he continued to serve the community as a custodian at the Oacoma Community Center, a host at the Chamberlain Rest Area, and as a driver for ROCS transit.
Jimmy was a sports enthusiast and spent many of his younger years playing softball, basketball, wrestling, golf, and baseball for the Chamberlain Mallards, where he proudly wore the "#1". Jimmy was a football/basketball official and really enjoyed his time working with his buddies on those crews. One of the greatest joys in life was watching his sons and all his grandchildren play in their athletic events.
Jim and Dotty DeBoer were married on June 20, 1974. To this union, two boys, TJ (Theodore James) and Justin, were born.
On June 16, 2007, Jimmy married his dear wife, Connie (Peterson). With this union, Jimmy became a loving step-father to Dawn Magstadt and Billie Jo Baer. Jimmy cherished his marriage to Connie and always did his best to take care of her. Connie's daughters and grandchildren loved Jimmy as well and they were blessed to create many family memories together.
Jim, 69, passed away on April 4, 2021 at the Avera Medical Center in Mitchell, SD. Jimmy will be deeply missed by his sons TJ (Rachelle) and Justin (Hollie) Steckelberg, step-daughters Dawn Magstadt and Billie Jo Baer (Jeff Nordseth), brothers Ron, Roger, Bruce and Steve Steckelberg, grandchildren Carson, Lex, Trishelle, Kennedy, Grayson and Madden Steckelberg, Brittany (Justin) Iburg, Levi, Logan, and Sara Kreger, great-grandchild Bennett Iburg, along with many nieces and nephews, numerous friends and a wealth of acquaintances he met along his journey
Jim is preceded in death by both his parents Gene and Delora Steckelberg and his brother Bill.
