Obituary

Graveside services for Jacob B. Barth, 28, of Chamberlain, SD will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 7, 2025 at the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain, SD.

Jacob was born on February 16, 1997, in Reno, Nevada, to his parents, Michelle and Bradley. He passed away on June 1, 2025, in Watertown, South Dakota, at just 28 years old.

Jake was calm. He was kind. He was gentle.
He had a thoughtful heart and a quiet, steady sense of humor.
He was the kind of person who made others feel safe—who made you feel seen.
Jake didn't shout his love from the rooftops. But he gave it, fully and deeply, in his own quiet way.

As a child and young man, Jacob was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He attended early morning seminary for four years and graduated with pride. In 2014, he participated in Trek—a reenactment of the Mormon pioneers' journey—and that experience touched him deeply.

Jake was also incredibly intelligent. He earned a 34 on his ACT, graduated with honors, and was accepted into the South Dakota School of Mines for electrical engineering. And although he didn't complete the program, his family and friends were so proud of him—for all he had accomplished, and all he dreamed of.

But what mattered most about Jacob wasn't found in grades or achievements.
It was in the way he loved peaceful, grounding things.
He found joy in gardening. In cooking. In baking bread.
Once, he planted a patch of sunflowers in the backyard. They grew tall and golden—just like him. Quietly strong. Full of warmth.

Later in life, Jacob was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
That changed the path he walked—but it never changed who he was.

Even when things were hard, Jake always found moments of clarity. And in those moments, he would reach out—with a call or a message.
Asking for connection. Asking for love.

And those who loved him gave it—because he never stopped being Jake.

Jacob is survived by his parents, Michelle and Bradley Barth of Chamberlain;
his sisters: Allison (Joeseph) Chen of Sioux Falls; Andrea of Watertown; Jessie (Seth) Brakke; and Amanda (Patrick) Danskin of Ketchikan, Alaska. His grandparents Harley Hettick and Elaine Bond, as well as numerous Uncles, Aunts, Nephews, Nieces, Cousins, and you can't forget his loyal hound Ruckus.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Ralph Barth, Pearl Fretwell, Jack Bond, Joey Hettick and by his uncle Gregory Hettick.

Jake's life had its challenges—but it was also full of courage, intelligence, kindness, and so much love.
He was a beloved son. A loyal brother. A cherished grandson. And a true friend.

In this life—and in the next—he will always be remembered.

Forever their brother.
Forever their baby.
Forever their friend.
