Obituary

Funeral services for Hermaline H. Wounded Knee, 75, of Fort Thompson will be 10:00 am Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Fort Thompson with burial in the St. John's Episcopal Cemetery at Crow Creek.  Wake services will be 7:00 pm Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Fort Thompson.

Hermaline H. Tehyantakiya Yamayankapi "Come to See Me, Along Ways" Wounded Knee, 75, of Fort Thompson died peacefully on August 2, 2018 at Sanford Chamberlain Hospice Unit, due to a cancer related illness.

Hermaline was born on January 31, 1943, as the daughter of Rachael Pearl (Voice) Head and Lee Rubin Head, in Old Fort Thompson.  She attended grade school at Fort Thompson BIA School, in Old Fort Thompson before dropping out of school to take care of her ill mother.  As a result, she found her passion to care for others which led her to the Community Bailey Hospital in Chamberlain where she became a nurse's aide.  She held this position for 26 years.  With her most recent employer, Lode Star Casino, she had dedicated 26 years before her retirement.

She met the love of her life Leon Wounded Knee and they were united in marriage on February 8, 1973.  To this union a son was born, William Joseph Wounded Knee, whom hours later passed on.  They raised two children Janice Sazue and James Sazue and one adopted son Lee Wounded Knee.  Also, at this time they were foster parents to many children.

Hermaline is survived by a her three children Janice Sazue, James Sazue and Lee Wounded Knee, Sr.; brother Rodney Head and family; and several nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her mother Rachael Pearl (Voice) Head; father Lee Rubin Head; husband Leon Wounded Knee; son William Joseph Wounded Knee; sisters Lavina Wells and Donna Maria Head; brother-in-law Lester Wells, Sr.; nephew Harry Lee Head; and grandson Brian Lucas Jones.
