Hazel McGhee-Olson was born at the old Fort Thompson Hospital on May 28, 1924 to Frank and Mercy (McBride) McGhee of the Crow Creek district. Hazel shared housing with nine brothers and sisters.

Hazel attended local country schools and then later attended the new Fort Thompson government school. After her school years, Hazel worked various jobs around the country.

On October 19, 1950 Hazel was united in marriage to Bob Olson of Fort Thompson, SD. Hazel was primarily a home maker and Bob was a ranch hand for Cable Land and Cattle Co. Hazel then served as a cook for the ranch hands. Bob and Hazel attended various rodeos around the country, as Bob was very active in bareback, saddle bronc and bull riding until he got hurt in a Mitchell rodeo.

To their union one son, Armond "Red" Olson, was born. He was their only child, however, there were always cousins that stayed with the Olson's. Wayne "Flookie" McGhee stayed with them through most of his grade school and some high school. After his graduation from Gann Valley High School, Red joined the US Army in 1966. After his obligation, he returned home to marry JoAnn Dominiack in 1970, from which three children were born.

Gratefully sharing her life is her son, Armond "Red" (JoAnn) Olson of Fort Thompson, grandson Chad Olson of Chamberlain, grand-daughters Kristi Olson-Thompson (Brad) of Pukwana and Stacy Olson of Mitchell, eleven great grandchildren Trevor Olson of Chamberlain, Briana, Bridgette, Kammie, Karlie, Brendan and Kaden Thompson of Pukwana, Levi Olson of Yankton, Emma, Ryken and Kai Dicus of Mitchell, sister Helen McGhee-Fuerst of Fort Thompson, brothers Frank McGhee Jr. of Rapid City and Leroy McGhee of Fort Thompson, and half-brother Dicky Ross of Fort Thompson.

Preceding her in death are her late husband Bob Olson, her parents Frank and Mercy McGhee, her brothers Vern, Arnold, and Robert McGhee, sisters Effie Miller, Della Lytle, and Hilda Long Crow.
