Funeral services for Harold W. Thompson, Sr., 71, of Fort Thompson will be 1:00 pm Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at the Crow Creek Tribal Hall in Fort Thompson with burial in St. John's Episcopal Cemetery at Crow Creek, SD. Wake services will be Sunday and Monday evening at 7:00 pm at the Crow Creek Tribal Hall in Fort Thompson.
Harold Wayne Thompson, Sr., 71, of Fort Thompson passed away on October 5, 2018 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
Harold Wayne Thompson was born December 30, 1946 at Old Fort Thompson Hospital to Melvin M. Thompson, Sr. and Amanda (Loudner) Thompson. He attended grade school at Fort Thompson and graduated in May of 1965 from Gann Valley High School at Gann Valley, SD. In 1966, Harold enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served seven years of active duty and four years with the S. D. National Guard. Harold did not speak much about his time serving in the Army which included time served in the Vietnam War. Harold said a real warrior did not brag about being in combat and that is why he kept it secret. He was in the 8th Infantry Airborne Division, serving in the 7th Crops Division, 34th Signal Battalion, 12th Combat Engineers Battalion, and also the 200th Engineers Division. His service lasted a total of eleven years and seven months. A motor vehicle accident, which left him with a broken back kept him from fulfilling his dream of retirement from the U.S. Army. He was honorable discharged as a Sargent
Harold was united in marriage to Nancy Shield for a little more than 30 years. She passed away two years ago.
From a previous marriage, five children were born: Karrie Ann, Thomas Wayne Sr., Kevin Todd aka Harold Wayne Jr., Karlene and John Wayne.
He loved all his grandchildren, Thompson, and Loudner relatives along with any other relatives he ever met.
Harold retired as a State Cert. Welder, ASE Diesel and Automotive Mechanic, and also certified in Carpentry and HVAC.
"We all must die, sometime it's part of life. So don't grieve for long - love one another and move on with life. Someday you too will leave. Remember to take care of one another, even though you fight among each other, forgive each other as family MUST stick together. SO LOVE EACH OTHER." The Dude 2004 .
Harold is survived by his daughters: Karrie and Wally Donner and Karlene and Keith Heth, Jr.; his sons Thomas and Donelle Thompson, Sr. and John Thompson; grandchildren Joseph, Jonathan Wayne, Joshua, Allen Wayne, Thomas Wayne Jr., Daniel Wayne, Allysson, Maria, Reign, Angelina, John Wayne Jr., Angel, Karin Lee, Mary, Anthony, Azriel, Keith Wayne III; four great grandchildren Keenai, Saywer Wayne, Esme who was born on his birthday, and Oliver Wayne who was born when the Dude left.
Preceding him in death were his wife Nancy; parents Melvin and Amanda; two brothers Tommy and Avery Thompson Sr.; son Kevin "Buddy" Thompson; two grandchildren Noah and Jamie Lynn' and three nephews Larry, Jr., and Robbie.
