Gerald (Jerry) Vode Mohr was born February 12, 1936, to Margaret (Hess) and George Leonard Mohr at home in rural Lyman County. He attended school in Lyman County through 8th grade. After the passing of his stepfather he was forced to leave school and work on the farm. On August 21, 1954 he was united in marriage to Adella Mae (Schelske) (the first couple to be married at the new Trinity Lutheran Church in Reliance). Jerry joined the Army and they moved to Washington state before being stationed in Korea. Adella and Jerry had many wonderful memories of that time. In 1964 they moved an old house from Fort Hale Bottom to Lyman. They remodeled the house and this was their home for 57 years. During this time, they operated a dairy, farmed, and ranched. In the mid 60's after a rousing time with a Holstien bull (which involved a pitchfork), Adella told Jerry she was not going out with the cows until the bull was gone. Jerry was in a pickle because he didn't want to milk very much. The answer was learning how artificial inseminate cattle at a school provided by Carnation Genetics. He then not only AI'd our cows but thousands of cattle in California, Florida, and the surrounding states. In addition, he taught many other farmers/ranchers how to AI. We would have schools in our living room with the slide projector going.
Jerry was the perfect example of being a jack of all trades. He was an accomplished welder, mechanic, carpenter, and woodworker. He helped build many homes and barns through the years. In later years he worked on repairing, refinishing, and building furniture. He took great pride in passing these skills on to his grandchildren. Jerry was an avid reader through life. There was always a Louis L'Amour western, Farm Journal, or Minnesota Vikings paper next to his chair. Always willing to give his time, he continued a life of service. He served over 30 years on the Rex Township board in various positions. Later in life he served on the Trinity Lutheran Church council and local American Legion where he could be found cooking breakfast on the weekends.
