Gayle Mohr, 63, of Reliance, South Dakota, passed away the evening of July 9, 2026, after being involved in a fatal car accident. She was born October 13, 1962  in Mitchell, SD, the second of three children to Jerry and Adella (Schelske) Mohr. She grew up in Lyman, where her folks ran a dairy. It was there that she attended a one-room school and met a neighbor boy who was four years older. She walked up to this boy in class and pronounced, “I am going to marry you,” to which he replied, “Yuck,” while proceeding to push her to the ground. Turns out, she did end up marrying Chris many years later.

She went to both junior high and high school in Presho, while the neighbor boy Chris attended school in Chamberlain. Later, they bumped into each other at a dance in Reliance and soon became a couple. Gayle attended college for two years at the School of Mines in Rapid City, SD. After a car accident put her in a back brace, the neighbor boy proposed. Since he would not budge on moving to the city, she agreed to pursue a teaching degree at Northern State in Aberdeen, SD, and was later married to Chris Eymer on January 6, 1984, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain.

Her first year of teaching was in Chamberlain, but since her home was in Reliance, she transferred to the Lyman School District in Presho the following year, where she taught for the next 40+ years. She genuinely loved to teach and was committed to her job and especially her students. Her ability to connect with her students was truly amazing, and the impact she had on their lives extended far beyond the classroom. At the same time, Gayle worked alongside Chris to build their farming operation, beginning their life in a trailer house before moving and renovating a home on the property, all while both working full-time jobs and farming on the side.

They welcomed their first son, Conrad Mohr-Eymer, in 1997, and their second son, Corwin Mohr-Eymer, in 2001. Both of her boys made her extremely proud. While they were growing up, she kept her boys busy in many activities. Once they were old enough, she enrolled them in 4-H, eventually becoming a leader of the Lyman Longhorns 4-H Club in Reliance, a role she held until her passing. While in 4-H, she decided it might be fun to show dairy goats. She initially started with three goats her boys were able to show at the local fair. Having grown up on a dairy, she became very fond of them, growing a sizable herd of registered dairy goats. She loaned these goats to numerous 4-H’ers to show at both local and state fairs, as well as the Western Junior Livestock Show.

Being a charter member of Reliance Area Community Development (RACD), Gayle was the driving force behind the annual dinner theatre play, in which she held a role as a cast member every year except one—only missing because she was pregnant with Corwin.

Throughout her life, she was known as an avid baker. Whether it was cookies, rolls, or her famous kuchen, she could be found cooking for numerous events throughout the community. Always volunteering to bake treats for fundraisers, the 4-H club, or families in need.

Gayle retired from teaching in 2025, and welcomed her first grandson, Otis Mohr-Eymer, in March of 2026. She was extremely excited to become a grandparent and spend more time with her boys.

Gayle is survived by her spouse, Chris Eymer; her two sons and their wives, Conrad and McKenzie Mohr-Eymer, and Corwin and Kadi Mohr-Eymer; her grandson, Otis Mohr-Eymer; her brothers, Greg Mohr and Garet Mohr (Deb Fickett); her brother-in-law, Bruce Eymer (and family); her aunts, Karen (Steve) Gunter, Connie Surat, and Delilah (Steve) Fletcher; her uncle, Ralph (Gina) Schelske; her niece, Caitlin Mohr (Aaron Le); her nephew, Levi Mohr; and close friend of the family Randy George.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Adella and Gerald Mohr; her grandparents, Adolph and Esther (Burkhardt) Schelske, and Margaret and Leonard Mohr; her uncles, Louis (Cleo) Schelske, Lowell Surat, and Gene (Helen) Mohr; and her aunts, DeeVonne (Randy) Whitlock, Denise, Mardelle, and Janice Schelske.
