FRANK BOOTH CABLE III January 4, 1938 – May 20, 2020

Frank B. Cable III of Chamberlain was born on January 4, 1938 in Hudson SD, the son of Frank B. Cable II and Agnes Benson Cable Creamer. He died on May 20, 2020 at Ava's House hospice in Sioux Falls, with son Steve and daughter-in-law Cindy at his side.  His life was celebrated at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain on May 22 with a graveside service on May 23 at Riverside Cemetery.

When Frank was 1-1/2 years old, the family moved to the Chamberlain area and Buffalo County to start a ranch which grew into a father and son business, the Cable Land and Cattle Company.  Frank came from a long line of successful South Dakota cattlemen: his father Frank B. Cable II, his grandfather Frank B. Cable and his great-grandfather David B. Cable all had large cattle operations.  His great uncle, Elwood Cable, moved to the Chamberlain area in 1899 and operated a cattle ranch near Chamberlain for 40 years.

Frank graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1956.  He was active in 4-H and attended Brookings Agricultural College. He served in the South Dakota National Guard for three years. Prior to being struck down with Rheumatoid Arthritis, which plagued him his entire adult life, he was an avid outdoorsman and talented athlete at the local, district and state levels.  He pitched for the Gann Valley and Chamberlain baseball teams and played forward on the CHS basketball team

Frank married Alta Lee Larsen on July 14, 1957 and began their married life on the Cable Ranch north of Pukwana, later moving to the ranch north of Chamberlain where they raised their three children. Always curious and an optimist, Frank got his private pilot's license and during RA remissions he loved flying his Piper Cub, fishing the Missouri River, hunting elk in Colorado, playing golf, bowling, flying remote control airplanes, and enjoying many friends.

Frank was a founding member of the North American Limousin Foundation, beginning with 15 head of black angus heifers which he bred to Limousin. He went on to breed and raise his own herd to full breeds. In 1980 he retired from ranching and moved to rural Chamberlain and started Cable's Custom Chopping with son Steve, harvesting crops from Texas to the Dakotas. Alta and Frank welcomed hundreds of guests to Cable's Riverview Ridge Bed & Breakfast, with many of them returning every year for the famous hospitality.

Above all, Frank had a strong commitment to family.  He was a loving son, husband, father, brother and friend. He cared for his wife, Alta, during her seven year illness at their home overlooking the Missouri River until moving to Sioux Falls in August. He is survived by: sons Russell of Seguin, TX and Steven (Cindy) of Sioux Falls; daughter Michelle (Wilson) Stevens of Goldsboro, NC; brother Harley (Dawn) Cable of Pukwana; sisters Linda Cable Kakela and Barbara Cable Williams of Steamboat Springs, CO, and Sharon (Wade) Caslin of Chino Valley, Arizona; sister-in-law Mavis (Richard) Hansen of Reliance; grandchildren: Tessa, Lacey, Russell, Cassie, Matt, Jared, Racquel, Samantha and Danielle; eleven great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews all of whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death in January by his wife of 62 years Alta Larsen Cable, by his parents, niece Jimmi Rose Cable, and brothers-in-law, Wayne Kakela and Charley Williams of Steamboat Springs.
