Florine Glaus, 99, passed away peacefully with family at her side, on March 23 at the Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain. Florine was born March 6, 1927 on the family ranch south of Isabel, SD to Raymond and Frances (Stangl) Lee. She attended both the Heck and Center country schools. In good weather she and her siblings rode horseback four miles to school. On the cold and snowy days, her brother Arnie would pull Florine and her sister, Vronna, on a sled behind his horse. In 1944, she graduated from Isabel High School.
Growing up she was active in 4-H and received a scholarship to attend SDSU, then graduated in 1948 with a home economic degree. While attending SDSU, she was a member of the 4-H, home economics and art clubs as well as the girls rifle team. In addition, she was chosen as queen of the SDSU senior class, as well as involved in Little International where she won the milking contest and met the love of her life, John Glaus. Following graduation, she taught home economics for one year in Draper, SD.
John and Florine were married June 8, 1949 in Isabel and took over the Glaus Angus Ranch that was started by John's grandfather in 1903.
Florine was known to be an able hand at any and all tasks on the ranch, notably her ability to drive the silage truck and feed a table full of men a fabulous meal. She truly was a great cook and loved to bake.
Growing up, her mother served fresh baked cinnamon rolls, caramel rolls or twists every Sunday morning before church, a tradition Florine continued for her family.
John and Florine, married for 62 years, had four children twins Janet and June, son Jim and daughter Barb.
Along with her love for ranch life, her family, and Christian faith Florine was enthusiastically dedicated to the United Church of Christ, the Clover Lassies 4-H Club that she started in 1949 and was leader for 30 years. She encouraged, molded and touched many young girls over that time. A huge part of her life was dedicated to beef promotion. She was actively involved in Prime Cowbelles and held many office positions. She was president of the S.D, Cattlewomen's from 1985-1986, and member of the National Cattlewomen's Association. Other club involvement, just to name a few, included Town and Country Extension, PEO Chapter AA, Fellowship, and State 4-H Trust Board. For many consecutive years she enjoyed judging 4-H exhibits at the County Fair and the South Dakota State Fair.
Bestowed honors include: Little International (SDSU), Honored Homemaker (1980), Eminent Homemaker (1983), and South Dakota Beef Industry Prime Promoter (2010).
As Florine got older and physically unable to do much, and especially as an SDSU graduate, she looked forward to watching SDSU Football games and men's and women's basketball teams on TV.
Years ago, her dad and brother listened to the Minnesota Twins baseball games on the radio. She too followed the Twins and watched games on TV, a simple pleasure she enjoyed.
Many of you knew Florine's love of Cardinals. She was always thrilled when they came to her bird feeder or heard them singing in the cedar trees. She received many "cardinal" gifts over the years, anything from figurines, pictures, hand towels, socks, and more.
To all of you, who took the time to pop in to say hello, share a story, say a prayer, or just reminisce, we say "Thank You!"
Florine always looked forward to visits from family and friends. At 99, she had many, many friends from young to old. Each of you meant so much to her.
Florine is survived by her children: Janet (Roger) Wehde of Sioux Falls, June Shields of Harrisburg, Jim (Sholi) Glaus of Chamberlain, Barb (Don) Walker of Rapid City; grandchildren Troy Glaus of Brookings, Lee ( Derek Dittert) Shields of Littleton, CO, Amy (Andy) Schoeberl of Lennox, Sara Powell of Harrisburg, Kelsey (Garrett) Wehde Wilson of Palmetto, FL, Tate (Cheyenne) Glaus of Chamberlain, Teil (Clarissa) Glaus of Chamberlain, Savanna (Calder) Johnston of Elm Springs, Moriah (Jacob) Edler of Alva, Ok, Ben (Ashley) Walker of Rapid City, Samuel Walker of Black Hawk, and Clint (Katie) Walker of Sturgis; and great grandchildren (as Florine called them "the little ones") Tia, Malia, Jolena, Carol Ann, Gavin, Harper, Braden, Brynn, Brooklyn, Davy, Collins, Vada, Boone, Mac, Gracie, Della, Style, Truett, Jovi, Taylee, Ella, Landon, Ridley, Charli (arriving June 2026).
