Memorial services for Evelyn Simkins, 98, of Gillett, WY, formally of Chamberlain, SD will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 2021 at the Hickey Funeral Chapel in Chamberlain, SD. Inurnment will be at the Riverview Cemetery in Chamberlain, SD.

Evelyn Simkins passed away April 18, 2021 in Gillett, Wyoming at the age of 98, just seven weeks short of 99.

Evelyn was born in South Dakota on June 8, 1922 to Grover and Martha (Pickner) Satterlee. She grew up on the family farm north of Pukwana. She attended grade school and graduated high school in Pukwana, South Dakota.

She married Elmer Simkins from Winner, South Dakota. To this union, two children were born Gerald and Patricia Ann.

They made their first home in Winner, SD. Evelyn worked for Omaha Cold Storage. Elmer and Evelyn purchased Simkins Produce in Martin, SD in 1948 and moved the family to Martin just in time to witness the 1948 and 1949 blizzard. In the early 50s they started the Simkins Lumber and Feed Store, which later was turned into the E&E Tavern. In 1968, Elmer and Evelyn moved back to Chamberlain and purchased the Dwyer's Bar and renamed it the Silver Dollar Bar. They operated the bar for several years before selling it.

They resided south of Chamberlain at a place with a few acres on which they raised chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese, pigs, and cows. You name it, they raised it! Evelyn always had to be working. She worked at the C&E for the Hiebs as a convenience store clerk for over 17 years and that was the last place she officially "worked". She enjoyed working and it is what kept her going. She also enjoyed fishing and playing cards; which she won a lot. She was able to do more of these after she retired at the age of 86.

Evelyn moved to Gillette, WY in September 2017 to be closer to family. She lived with her daughter Pat.

Evelyn is survived by her son Gerald (Judy) Simkins of Larchwood, IA; daughter Pat Kirk of Gillette, WY; four grandchildren Russ Simkins, Randy Simkins, Tracy Kirk, and Craig Kirk; six great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents Grover and Martha Satterlee; her husband Elmer Simkins; and her two brothers Herbert and Allen Satterlee.

She will be loved and missed by many and NEVER forgotten.
