Funeral services for Dorothy L. Markus, 95, of Chamberlain, SD will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 5, 2024 at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain, SD.  Visitation will begin Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the choir/music department at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain.

Dorothy was born April 7, 1929 to Rev. Bernard and Esther (VanDenTak) Hietbrink at home in Strausberg, N.D. When she was 5 years old her parents moved to Little Rock, IA. She attended school there through the 8th grade. The family then moved to Corsica, S. D. where she graduated from Corsica High School in 1946. She also attended Southern State College at Springfield, S. D. and taught at rural schools for 3 years.

On August 15, 1947 she was united in marriage to Milford Markus at the Grace Reformed Church in Corsica. Her father performed the service.

They moved to Laredo, TX in 1949 where Milford worked for the United States Border Patrol. While there, Linda was born. They moved back to S.D. in February 1950 when Milford joined the S. D. Highway Patrol. They lived in Miller, S.D. for a short time and then moved to Huron, S.D.  Loren and Peggy joined the family while they lived in Huron.

Dorothy and Milford moved to Chamberlain, S.D. in August of 1958.

Dorothy was an active member of the United Church of Christ, serving on almost every board of the Church. She was also very active in the Women's Fellowship and circles.

She was a 4-H leader for several years.

Dorothy loved cooking and baking for her family and friends. There was always room for family, friends, grandchildren or anyone who happened to come along at mealtime.

She loved to sew and taught Adult Sewing classes for several years. She worked as a secretary for Boyd McMurchie, then the Clerk Of Courts office, and then worked for Casey Drug store for over 35 years in various capacities.

Dorothy passed away on June 26, 2024 at Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Milford, daughter Peggy, son-in law, Wayne Johnson. Sister, Jean (Tony) Scholten and brother, Bernard (Elaine) Hietbrink. Her brother-in-law Dennis Markus (Doris), Sister-in-law Marlene (Dean) Plooster, and sister-in-law Nona Markus.

She is survived by her daughter Linda Johnson, Chamberlain, son Loren (Jennifer) Markus of Cibolo, Texas. 9 Grandchildren, Jason (Emily) Johnson, Trent (Meagan) Johnson, Sean Johnson, Melanie (Marques) Wood, Erik (Kelly) Markus, Brent Markus, Jessica (Brian) Paulin, Tim (Carson) Pringle, Jeffrey (Chelsey) Pringle. 21 Great Grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. She also is survived by 2 special grandchildren Kayla and Kylie and their families.
