Charles M.
Meyer
January 24, 1939 – December 7, 2022
Charles M. Meyer, 83, from Pukwana, passed away on December 7th, 2022, in Pensacola, FL. A small family funeral service was held in Pensacola, and in July 2023, his son Michael will have a funeral service and his ashes will be buried at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Pukwana per Charles' request.
Charles Michael Meyer was born January 24, 1939, at Chamberlain, SD to Paul W. Meyer and Mary (Collins) Meyer. He attended elementary school at Red Lake for three years and then attended Pukwana grade school and High School where he graduated in 1956.
In the summers during and after high school, Charles spent time working for Duane Briggs Painting along with friends Ralph Pickner and Duane Miller. He also enlisted in the SD National Guard right after high school with friends Ray Willard and Wayne Bely and several other Pukwana friends. Later on, he attended Southern State College in Springfield, SD to get a teaching degree specializing in Math and English.
On Aug 14, 1964, Charles was united in marriage to Sally K. London at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. On Aug 6, 1965, their son Michael was born.
Later on, he attended Northern State College and received a specialized Master's Degree of Education with emphasis in education for special needs students. He taught for several years as a teacher in Mission, SD, and later several more years at Fort Thompson, SD.
After his father Paul passed, Charles decided to try his hand at farming. He enjoyed raising small herds of livestock and growing crops. In his later years, he determined goats did a good job keeping the weeds down and were easier to raise than pigs and sheep. He loved planting trees and planted quite a few shelter belts after living through the blizzards of the 1970's that completely snowed the farm in.
Charles worked at the Chamberlain police department as a dispatcher for many years to supplement Farm Income. He was a collector of many things and enjoyed collecting old bikes, car hubcaps, and older lumber. He was also musically talented and learned how to place the concertina. He and Sally would sing "You are my Sunshine" to the grandchildren.
He retired from dispatching when he turned 65. At age 70, he was unfortunately diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). His mobility slowly continued to diminish and in 2019 he and his wife Sally moved to Pensacola to live with their son Michael.
Charles was a lifetime member of St. Anthony's Church in Pukwana, and St. James Church in Chamberlain, and also was active in the Knights of Columbus and eventually became a 4th Degree Knight.
He loved family, was devoted to the Lord, prayed often, and was a good father. He loved his Son, Grandchildren, and Great Grandchildren and worked diligently in his later years to create many garden trails with adventurous paths the grandkids could explore and enjoy. He loved gardening and since he was Irish, loved planting potatoes and pumpkins. He always raised extra so he could give a lot of produce away to friends and family.
Charles and Sally were together for 58 years, and leave behind their sister Eileen Meyer in Chicago, their son Michael & wife Jackie (Jacobs) Meyer, daughter-in-law Linda (Giese) Rose, grandson Steven & Julie (Byrd) Meyer, grand-daughter Rebecca (Meyer) Sexton, grandson Matthew & Emily (Hunt) Meyer, and great-grandson's Adyn Meyer, Cillian Meyer, & Tommy Sexton, and great-grand daughters Elliot Sexton & Sadie Meyer. They also leave Immediate Family members Pat and Nancy London, Ginger and Dennis Urban, Maureen and John Gerdes, Marianne London, & Donna and Mike Dekemper. Nephew Walter Stearns and Eugene Dizon from the Meyer side, and 19 Nephews and Nieces from the London side.
Preceding Charles and Sally in death were parents Mary & Paul Meyer and Gerald & Lois London, sister Joan Stearns, brothers-in-law Geoff Fletcher, Leonard Stearns, Gene London, Mike London, & nephew Kelly Urban.
Funeral services will be Monday, July 10th, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Chamberlain with Deacon James Bregel presiding, with burial/placement of ashes in St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery in Pukwana.
A celebration of life luncheon will follow burial in Pukwana. Please assist with the luncheon planning by RSVPing.
