Brian David
Nies
August 4, 1968 – September 11, 2024
Funeral services for Brian D. Nies, 56, of Sioux Falls, SD will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 20, 2024 at the Christ the King Catholic Church in Presho, SD. Visitation will begin Thursday at 5:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. scripture service at Christ the King Catholic Church in Presho, SD. Burial will be at a later date.
Brian was born August 4, 1968 (a mere 3 minutes after his twin sister Barb) in Pierre, SD to David and Sandra (Bingen) Nies. He grew up in Presho, SD and attended Lyman School District, graduating in 1986. He joined the U.S. Army following graduation and served his country for more than 5 years, including deployments to Korea and Desert Storm. He was honorably discharged in December 1991. After driving truck for the military, he continued in the profession as an OTR driver for the next 33 years, logging approximately 5 million miles over his career.
He loved his family, both close relatives and extended, and kept in regular contact with all of them. He treated his nieces and nephews as his own children, and continued the tradition with the next generation.
He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson when he had time and especially during the Sturgis Rally time. He was a regular attendee of any family get-togethers, but especially the Nies Reunions at Camp Bob Marshall in the Black Hills, He loved his job, driving across the country these past 38 years-the open roads, the adventure, the landscapes, and even the solitude. He used that solitude to great advantage, spending the time catching up with family and friends with his phone calls often lasting a couple of hours
Brian lived the life of an American hero. Not as the kind that has a wall full of medals and is honored on special occasions. Brian's life makes up the fabric of a strong nation. He was honored to serve his country as a young man in the Army. Then he came home to use the skills he learned while serving.
It is not every day that you find a man like Brian that spent his life performing a job that holds businesses and an economy together through all kinds of weather, in times of war and peace, even through pandemics. And at the same time is faithful to check in on family and friends to let them know he's there to help keep them together.
He led the kind of life that keeps America strong.
Brian passed away September 11, 2024 in Kentucky. Gratefully sharing his life are his father David Nies, his sisters Jeanne (Damian) Nies-Donahoe, Barbara Gakin, and Debra Nies, 11 nieces and nephews, 11 great-nieces and nephews, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was especially close to his Haugaard cousins and spent a great deal of time with them all whenever he was off the road.
He was preceded in death by his mother Sandra Nies, aunts Susan Vander Woude & Karen Meeker, uncles Gary Nies, Lloyd Nies, Paul Vander Woude, and Dick Meeker, cousin Becky Vander Woude, and his grandparents Theodore & Esther Nies and Roy & Frances Bingen.
