Graveside funeral services for Bonita Coleman, 82, of Fort Thompson, will be Thursday, December 31 st , 2020 at 2:00 pm. at Lakeview Cemetery, Fort Thompson.
Bonita Mary (Hopkins) Coleman was born May 11, 1938 in Old Fort Thompson to Peter and Francis (Fogg) Hopkins.
Bonita grew up in Ft. Thompson and attended school at Pine Ridge, Ft. Thompson, and Immaculate Conception, Stephan, South Dakota. On August 29, 1958, Bonita was united in marriage to John Coleman and to this union they had a blended family of nine children: David, Dan, Ronald, Richard, Michael, Tracy, Perry, Rebecca, and Mary Ellen.
During the marriage, Bonita and John lived in various locations including Tacoma, WA; San Bernardino, CA; Tucson, AZ; Albuquerque, NM; Marty, SD and Flandreau, SD.
Bonita attended Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, Albuquerque, New Mexico for culinary arts and graduated on the president's list. Bonita worked in Food Service the majority of her life and worked for Crow Creek High School, Flandreau Senior Center, Flandreau Indian School and Marty Indian School and finished her career with BIA Law Enforcement in Lower Brule.
Bonita's hobbies included traveling, flowers, gardening, word finds, visiting her many friends and relatives, and tending to all her grandkids. Bonita was a mother to many. She was a wonderful cook and always had a meal and pot of coffee waiting for anyone who stopped in to visit. Bonita was affectionately called One Leg In A Bloomer due to her love of traveling.
Bonita is survived by her seven children and two step sons: David Coleman, Dan Coleman, Ronald Hopkins, Richard (Martha) Coleman Sr., Michael (Patty) Coleman Sr., Perry Coleman, Tracy (Scott) Shields, Rebecca (Rich) Miller, and Mary Ellen (Gilbert) Pease, 38 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, brother: John Hopkins of Rapid City, sisters: Sandy (John) Abernathy of Fort Thompson, Marlene Gun Shows of Alexandria, Virginia and sister-in-law Genice Grimes of Long Beach, California.
Preceding in her death are parents: Peter and Francis Hopkins, husband: John Coleman, brothers: William, Floyd, and Bennie, and granddaughter: Robin Elaine Coleman.
