Barton P. Turgeon, 94, of Pukwana, passed away on August 18, 2026. Graveside services are pending.
Barton Payne Turgeon was born in Platte, South Dakota to Cesaire and Gertrud (Payne) Turgeon.
He attended the Graves Country School through the eighth grade.
In 1952 he joined the US Marine Crops and served as a tank commander in Korea during that conflict. He was honorably discharged in September 1955.
Upon leaving the Marine Corps he moved to Washington State and was employed at several jobs, finally settling on a job building pre-fab houses which he held until his retirement.
He returned to South Dakota in November 2019 to be closer to family and to continue his retirement years.
One of Barton’s fond memories was that of riding his horse to the Snake Creek pasture to check cattle, a task that took an entire day and covered many miles along the Missouri River.
Barton was joined in marriage to Holly Hammond on September 4, 1959, and June Mitchell on October 16, 1986.
Barton is survived by a cousin, Avis Leiferman, nieces, nephews, and one niece residing in the local area, Judy Campbell. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Theodore, Benjamin, and Phillip, and one sister, Pearl.
Interment to be in the Riverview Cemetery, Chamberlain, South Dakota.
